What is this calculator used for?
This calculator helps you estimate the minimum MRP of your book and your royalties on platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, and Ziffy Bees under the hybrid publishing model. It considers factors such as page count, format, print type, and selling price.
What is the 70% Royalty Model in Hybrid Publishing?
In hybrid publishing, the 70% royalty model means the author receives 70% of the net profit from each sale, and the publisher retains 30% to cover operational support, distribution management, platform maintenance, and other backend services.
Example Calculation: Scenario
Selling Price (MRP): ₹500
Printing Cost: ₹100
Amazon/Flipkart Calculation:
1. Distribution Fee (45%): ₹225
2. Net Profit: ₹500 - ₹100 (printing) - ₹225 (distribution) = ₹175
3. Author’s Royalty (70%): ₹122.50
4. Publisher Share (30%): ₹52.50
Ziffy Bees Calculation:
1. Distribution Fee (30%): ₹150
2. Net Profit: ₹500 - ₹100 (printing) - ₹150 (distribution) = ₹250
3. Author’s Royalty (70%): ₹175
4. Publisher Share (30%): ₹75
What is included in the 'Production Cost'?
Production cost = Printing cost + Platform Distribution Fee (Ziffy Bees or Amazon). This is the total cost deducted before calculating your royalty.
How much will be the expense of producing my book?
Please consider closely the factors that determine cost. First the number of pages, the size of the final volume with the number of pages needed to be in colour or only black and white, will factor in to determine cost of production. The final print-ready file will help a more accurate projection of the book’s cost.
What is the difference between ‘Mix Color’ and ‘Full Color’?
Mix Color: A limited percentage (typically up to 10%) of the book can be color pages. Full Color: Every page in the book is printed in color. Note: The calculator will also show you the max number of color pages allowed in 'Mix Color' format.
Can I set a selling price lower than the minimum MRP?
No. Selling below the minimum MRP would result in a negative or zero royalty. The calculator alerts you to ensure you price your book profitably.
How do I choose between paperback and hardcover?
Paperback: Lighter, cheaper to print, preferred for fiction and general reads. Hardcover: More premium, ideal for coffee table books, academic titles, or special editions. Your choice affects both the production cost and royalty.
Why do I see an error when I enter fewer than 40 or more than 900 pages?
Our hybrid publishing model supports books within the range of 40 to 900 pages. Books outside this range need special customization, so please contact our team directly.
How do I set the selling price of my book?
It entirely depends on the production cost. Factors like the number of pages, content, and finish of the book determine it. You can use our online calculator to estimate it.
What if my printing cost seems too high?
High printing cost could be due to: High page count Color printing Hardcover format Consider switching to paperback or mono printing to reduce costs. The calculator lets you experiment with combinations.
What if I need extra print copies?
If the author needs any extra copies for promotion or personal use must purchase from the publisher at a subsidy cost. The author can also purchase them directly from the dashboard.
